How to Tell Whether the System You Use Is an ERP

blog

How can you tell whether the system you are using is an ERP?

There are a great many ERP systems on the market, and the system that best supports running an organisation is the ERP.

An ERP is a large-scale system that can manage every department and every part of an organisation.

But how can a business owner tell whether the system they are about to implement, or already use, is genuinely an ERP?

You can tell whether the system you use is an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) by looking at the following core characteristics and functions.

1. Data integration

An ERP brings together data from every department in the organisation into centralised data management — for example finance, human resource management, inventory management, purchasing, production, and sales — all consolidated into one system, allowing data to be exchanged between departments efficiently.

2. Resource management

An ERP provides tools to manage the organisation’s resources, such as tracking resource usage, planning resource usage, and improving the efficiency of resource use.

3. Customisation and scalability

An ERP can be customised and scaled to suit the organisation’s needs, both in terms of functionality and the number of users.

4. Reporting and analysis

An ERP has tools for generating reports and in-depth data analysis, which lets executives take the results of the system’s reports and analysis and make decisions accurately.

5. Real-time operation

An ERP updates data in real time, so everyone in the organisation can access current and accurate information at all times.

6. Integration

An ERP can connect with other systems both inside and outside the organisation, such as CRM (Customer Relationship Management), supply chain management systems, and e-commerce systems.

In summary

If the system you are about to implement, or already use, has these characteristics, there is a high likelihood that it is an ERP.
